This method is applicable to drinking water and drinking water supplies, and should be used when the best available analytical procedure is required .

The method determines the numerical concentration of asbestos fibers, the length and width of each fiber, and the estimated mass concentration of asbestos in the water. Fiber size and aspect ratio distributions are also determined.

It is beyond the scope of this document to provide detailed instruction in electron microscopy, electron diffraction, crystallography or X-ray fluorescence techniques. It is assumed that those performing this analysis will be sufficiently knowledgeable in these fields to understand the specialized techniques involved.
